🧶 Structure

Weave matters: it changes strength, sheen, breathability, and drape.

Use this guide to match fabric construction to your project goals.

Plain Weave

Balanced and stable. Great for quilting cotton, broadcloth.

  • Easy to sew
  • Low stretch
  • Good for beginners

Twill Weave

Diagonal rib. Durable. Used in denim, chino, some upholstery.

  • More abrasion resistant
  • Better wrinkle recovery
  • Great for bags/pants

Satin Weave

High sheen and drape. Used in charmeuse and satin linings.

  • Beautiful flow
  • Snag-prone
  • Careful handling required

Knit vs Woven

  • Woven: stable, minimal stretch (unless elastane blend)
  • Knit: stretch, comfort, edge curling possible

Warp & Weft (Direction)

  • Warp: lengthwise, often stronger
  • Weft: crosswise, can behave differently
  • Bias cut adds drape and stretch
